The Theming Of The Rewrite

11 February 2026

Following up from the last post, I want to run down my ideas of how I'm going to adjust and solidify the theming of the sailor guardians. And yes, I'm going to use the phrase sailor guardians and not sailor scouts; one term is dignified and one term sounds like a play on boy or girl scouts, something I don't want to go with. I've also considered sailor soldiers, and as I start to write the story I might go with that, but for now I'm going to say sailor guardians.

Anyways.

I'm going to start with the format. Each sailor has an element, an aspect, a weapon, and a theme or role. In the canon these things range from explictly stated to non-existent. While I think some things were possibly implied, I think some of these things are not implied at all and I'm adding them wholesale. An element lines up with the traditional western idea of elements (water, fire, earth, and air). An aspect is something that the sailor is particularly strong with; in this case, mind, will, body, and heart. A weapon is an object that can be used as a weapon. And a theme or role is something that ties it all together, like a concept.

Technically, I'm not counting Sailor Moon or the Outers in this, as they are considered differently. The outers will still have similar ideas, but the inners are cohesive to each other and not necessarily the group as a whole. I'll probably talk about the Outers in another post.

So here's the breakdown:

Mercury:

water mind knives ninja

Mars

fire will bow archer

Jupiter

earth body hammer blacksmith

Venus

air heart wakizashi samurai

So why these choices? I'll go one by one.

Mercury has it rough in the original show. Her whole first "attack" is just "make it foggy" and frankly it means she's left out. I get it, she's the brains, not the brawn, but I want to integrate her further into the team. She still has the visor, and the Mercury computer, but now she's more proactive than just "find weakspots and blind enemies". Mercury has ice knives, and with her ninja theme she can be precise if not overwhelmingly strong. It plays to her strength without having to rely on the rest of the team. She's the scout, the analyst, and the precision fighter. I'm also renaming Bubble Spray but this is not the post for attack names. Her outfit will incorporate a veil and other ninja elements to give her a stealthier vibe.

Mars was the most obvious. Flame Sniper gives her a bow. She's fire based. She's always shown with crazy willpower. It all fits together, and her outfit will also incorporate shrine maiden and archer elements to finish it out.

Jupiter gave me the most trouble. I wanted her to fit in with the crew, and I kept wanting to make her a combat archetype, but after a bit of thought and some consultation with a friend, we came up with blacksmith as her theme which tied it all together. The lightning and thunder, with a hammer, and it all adds up. She almost got a lance, a spear, a taiko drum (hold onto that thought, it'll come back in a later post), or even a matchlock rifle. But I'm glad she's got a hammer, and she rounds out the crew, as well as potentially being the original forger of the Sword of the Silver Crystal in the Silver Millenium.

Venus had to be a samurai. She's the leader, and while I love her chain whip, it made the most sense to give her a short sword, which later will pair with the SotSC to give her dual swords like a samurai. I'm not sure if Venus was ever meant to be air themed in the way Mercury is clearly water themed and Mars is clearly fire themed, but in the end I figured it made sense to round out the group.

Sailor Moon will get her own post, but she's the princess/empress/etc. This post has gone on long enough though. With all this laid out, I'm one step closer to actually...writing this story. I also might talk about the future of this blog at some point but for now it's a place to organize my thoughts and to share with others, as well as to remember commentary for later when I actually write this story.
